What to do if you've lost a house key

Oh no! Your house key has gone missing!

Losing your house key can be stressful, embarrassing, and wildly inconvenient—especially if it means you cannot get into your home. Losing a key presents a home security issue even if you have an alternative way of getting into your home. Here is everything you need to know and do if you've lost a key to your house.

1. First thing is first: don't panic and do not attempt to break into your house.

Being locked out of your house is a problem with a solution. Many solutions, in fact—most of which will be cheaper than the damage you would cause to your house by breaking into it. Plus, a bystander observing you break into your own house could easily cause even more problems.

2. Determine if there are any backup keys or alternative ways to enter the house

You may have given a key to a friend or family member. Perhaps your garage door has a keypad that you can use to get in. Maybe you put a backup key in a hidden location around the house. Make sure you have checked off all these possibilities before moving onto an alternative solution.

3. If you urgently need to get back into your house and all other backups have failed, call your local locksmith.

At R&R Lock and Key, we provide urgent, 24/7 locksmith services in the Island Park, ID and West Yellowstone, MT areas. If you are in this area and need help, please give us a call, day or night.

If you are outside of these areas, you can search for local locksmiths who can help you out. You will need to prove that you are the rightful resident of the location. Proof can be a driver’s license with your address, a bill addressed to your name, etc.

4. Consider re-keying your house's doors

It is possible that you've lost your key in a way that will allow someone to know which house it belongs to. For example, if someone you know stole your key from you, they can use it to enter your house when you are away. Or, if you lost your purse, and it contains a state-issued ID with your address and your keys, it will be easy for someone to track down your house and use your house key to enter it without resistance.

If you feel that such a situation could arise due to you having lost your keys, call a locksmith and have them re-key your locks and provide new keys. This will give you the piece of mind that, even if someone has your keys, they will not be able to get back into your house.
